Title Research: Silent Hill

Title Research: Silent Hill

I researched a horror film, "Silent Hill"'s title sequence to further my research in title formations. I used the website https://www.watchthetitles.com/titlesequence/silent-hill/ to answer my questions. Each director and horror film has its own twists while still staying true to the genre.

1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequence?

        - The title of the movie appears during the opening sequence. The title was not as colorful and was a subtle hint towards the horror genre. The title also appeared scrubby and messed up to resemble almost spiritual writing following along with the elements of a horror genre.

2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

        - In the sequence, black and white pictures were used to convey a disturbing and suspenseful mood. These images appeared such as a static T.V., an appearance of a subway floor, and many other unpleasant things. The title itself is also an image that stands out in the sequence by having a direct and indirect effect.

3. What connotations do these images carry?

        - These images have a negative connotation. This connotation is due to the lack of color and unpleasant setting the pictures depicted. Each image has its own connection to the unpleasant story and adds to the building suspenseful mood as the sound's tenseness grows greater and greater.

4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

        - The film establishes the feelings commonly found in the horror genre with the usage, of dull colors, specific pictures, transitions, and non-diegetic sound. The director tells a story through the images and creates an atmosphere that the audience feeds off of. The director targeted multiple different elements of the film to establish a full feeling of the genre's traits.

5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

        - The direct connection to the unpleasant and suspenseful images appealed to the audience seeking all the elements of horror.  The horror genre has distinct elements and conventions, and the director targets those to give the audience what they want.

6. How has technology been used effectively?

        - The main usage of technology was transitions and sounds. All images used share a similar atmosphere and due to this atmosphere, the dissolvent from one image to another allows the feeling to stay pressing in the audience's mind while they watch. The sound also helped enhance that feeling. The technology was used to overlay audio over images. This was done to extend the experience beyond the visual aspects and include the auditory aspect too, to make a full experience.
