Title Research: The Exorcist

 Title research: The Exorcist

I researched the opening title of "The Exorcist. To research, I used the website https://www.artofthetitle.com/title/the-exorcist/.

1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequence?

        - The sequence cuts from the scene to titles appearing on the screen.  the scene shown is an introduction to the setting. The title reads the name of the film in bold all capital red letters, "THE EXORCIST".

2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

        - The setting is something that is exposed in the opening sequence before the title of the film appears. The title then cuts and appears in bold letters before the scene continues.

3. What connotations do these images carry?

        - This title sequence has an unsettling connotation to it. As a suspension and quiet setting are introduced the title is cut to and the audience feels tense and uneasy. This is due to the bold red color which has an aggressive connotation to it with bold letters.

4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

        - Horror films are meant to make the audience feel uneasy and mainly fear. The abrupt, bold and simplistic title does that. The cuts from the scene to the title sequence also do that in the film. The quiet scene contradicts horror elements that spark the audience's inquiry on what will happen next.

5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

        - The eerie sounds and by showing the setting leaving the audience on edge. The calmness of the opening sequence leaves the audience wondering what will happen next. The tracking camera movement in the opening sequence also hints toward someone following someone, which hints towards horror conventions.

6. How has technology been used effectively?

        -  The main technology that has been used was scene cuts. This was used to cut the scene to the title and back to the scene. The technology was also used to reveal other words on to of playing scenes in the sequence. The usage of strongly contrasting colors created by technology helps enhance the uneasy feeling in the audience and bring it out.
