Research Blog: Commercial Conventions
I am doing a Gatorade commercial. In these commercials, a common thing to see is people working out or sports-related activities. The attire to go with these actions are usually workout clothing. Examples of these are tank tops, gym short, legging, and loose-fitting shirts. These commercials promote Gatorade in a specific way by always ending a workout or activity with a sip of the drink. These commercials have a mixed tempo of fast and slow. The commercial slow down when someone is talking but then will change to the workout/sports scene resulting in the tempo of the commercial to speed up. These commercials are usually centered around the drink. However, in addition to that, they have an inspirational theme throughout the video to work harder. The sound used in the commercial is also usually fast based motivating music to express the drive Gatorade gives you in your sport and life. The shot used during the commercials also adds a sense of dramatic feel. One of the ways they do this is by having the sweat glisten off the person and by speeding up the workout clip. They also do this by changing the angle the shot is taken and the camera movement. This commercial makes the audience know about their product by having the Gatorade logo at the end of the project and by having the product used throughout the video. The shots were taken during the commercial also usually have the Gatorade logo focused in on the camera so the eyes of the audience is drawn to it. These commercials also usually have a sense of persuasion in them by usually having one or more famous athletes talking about and overall promoting the product. This is using the persuasion technic of ethos. This is used to show the audience that some of the top athletes and role models believe in their product. This creates persuasion because if top athletes like these believe in the product people think that the product must be great then. These are the main aspects of what distinguishes a Gatorade commercial from other brands and commercials and a conclusion of research I had found about Gatorade commercials.
