Genre Research: Drama & Comedy
Genre Research: Drama & Comdey
Drama: - Camera Movements
- Panning: This is used to show the characters and their surroundings especially in rising action or the climax when tension is high especially in a drama.
- Tracking: This is used to add suspense and a tension
- Low-Key Lighting is used to build tension between characters which is a needed trade in dramas where there is usually a conflict between two or more characters.
- High Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the lack of power in characters usually in a conflict.
- Low Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the power a character or group of characters have in the situation.
- External Conflict with another character
- Internal Conflict that only the audience sees
- Tension, Anxiety, and Suspense in many Scenes
- Non-Diegetic: This is used to increase the effect of the action/dialogue of characters.
- Diegetic: Usually arguing with other characters which is a natural convention in drama.
- Sound Motif: This allows for the tense mood of one scene to carry over without losing its atmosphere.
- Examples
- Just Mercy
- The Hate U Give
- Elements I Like
- I like the element of sound that help amplify the visual aspects. The visual aspects are nice and help provide an initial feeling but the sounds used, subconsciously amplifies the already present feeling the audience gets from the choices and conventions made by the director.
- Elements I Don't Like
- I don't like the usage of low angles because in certain scenarios it is good, however, in some it makes the drama seem more like a horror and action genre.
Comedy:
- Camera Movements
- The Zoom is used as an awkward comedy camera movement as a hint/pause to the audience to understand.
- The Zoom Out is used similarly to a zoom-in and is used to enhance comedic action or words.
- The Reveal is commonly used during comedic times to enhance the effect.
- Perspective Shot is used to introduce the setting or location of the film.
- Lighting
- High Key Lighting is used so the settings and scenes have very upbeat lighting that follows the expectations of a comedy.
- Camera Angles
- Over the Shoulder Shot
- Three Shot this is used in Comedy's from the rule of 3
- Establishing Shot
- Fixed Shot
- Close Up
- Elements of Drama
- Usually an awkward relationship between characters that have relations with each other.
- A unique and stand-alone character facing the world.
- Sounds
- Non-Diegetic is used to enhance any action or dialogue done by chracters directing towards the humorous mood.
- Diegetic is very important in the genre especially in comedy because that is where the mood of the scene gets its comedic expectations from. What the characters say has everything to do with following under the conventions and elements of a Comedy.
- Sound Motif is used to carry the mood of one scene to the next.
- Examples
- The War with Grandpa
- Half Brothers
- Zootopia
- Elements I Like
- I like the usage of camera angles. I believe that in comedy's the thing that makes them great and really helps portray the mood and tone is the usage of dialogues to reach the audience in a more direct humorous way.
- Elements I Don't Like
- I don't like the usage of non-diegetic sound in the genre of comedies. I believe that comedies should be more direct with what is happening in the setting and scene, not unrelated background sound.
