Genre Research: IT

This was the last movie I researched under the horror genre which I picked. The movie I researched was IT. Elements I observed in the film were costumes, camera angle, lighting, and makeup. There were many other elements but these were the main ones. Costumes were one that I was favorable of. Sounds were also a big use in this film. The mainly diegetic sound was used in the form of dialogue and faint noises of the surroundings. This allowed the viewing audience to feel the suspense and presence in the scene. Usually, I prefer to have a more subtle hint of horror in costumes and many aspects of a film's genre. However, in this film, I loved the way the costumes and makeup really brought the story alive, along with the prop used as symbolism of the villain of the horror film. I also thought the lighting used was an excellent and much-needed element in the film IT. The low-key lighting set carried on the tone of any scene change as the lighting followed each scene. The element I was not too fond of was the camera movement. I thought that the camera movements of close-ups and many other slight angles added too much to the already potent film. I find that horror films need a balance. A film filled with too many horror genre elements loses its effect on the audiences changing mood. The IT film is surrounded by jump scares and suspense. Too many drastic costumes, diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound, make-up, and camera movement/angles reduce the effects. This ruins the basis of a suspenseful film full of jump scared because the audience gets used to it. However overall the film had very great strong and subtle elements.
