 Genre Research: The Conjuring

I chose to base my final task on horror. I chose to evaluate the movie "The Conjuring" which is well known in the horror genre. This film has the common elements of specifically low-key lighting. This set the mood in the setting and I found that very interesting. The mood and tone were already set just by the setting and lighting used. I also noticed the camera movement. I thought it helped spark fear into the audience with just the simple angle or movement of the camera. For example, they used a handheld camera movement to simulate as if a spirit was watching. This indirectly signals to the audience's fear of the situation. another example of camera movement is the zoom-in. This zoom-in is specifically done from the inside of the house to reflect that the characters are being watched and again reinstate that fearful mood. This is my favorite element of the film because it shows the importance and the differences slight attention to detail can make in the tone/mood of a film. I also appreciate the long shot used. This helped introduce the character in an unedited shot which made the audience feel in-person during the scene. One element I did not find that appealing was the costumes. I find an appreciation for heavier make-up such as gore and not as much for heavy costumes. In the movie, they use nun costumes and a few other costumes in the film. I prefer more discrete costumes so this is an element of horror and the Conjuring I would not prefer. Overall this movie follows the horror elements I like in films. These are the discrete subtle hints towards the tone the director wants the audience to feel.
