 Genre research: Antebellum

I researched movies dealing with horror. I dealt specifically with the movie Antebellum. The main element I noticed right away was the costumes. They weren't as stand-out horror as other costumes commonly found in horror films. The film also had elements of non-diegetic sound and diegetic sound. This was used in the film to appoint the audience's attention to specific fearful scenes of the movie. Camera angles were also important to show perspective in the shots and their settings. An example of this was the wide shots used. This established the setting's layout and the eerie distance of the characters. Point of view shots was also established to introduce the new setting. The main element I found fascinating was the camera angles. Seemingly normal settings appear to have a tense and scary atmosphere created by the angle. The sound used is also something I found fascinating. The director's attention to combining small details including dialogue and background noise all went for encouraging horror conventions. I also liked the costume elements. This was because many outfits weren't stand-alone scary. They were appropriate for the situation and it is the situation that made it scary. Overall there were no elements that I did not like but if I was to be picky it would be the lack of natural conventions. The movie had major horror movie conventions but I believe they could have used more of them which would have allowed the movie to follow under the horror category better than it did. Overall the directers attention to the small details making up the bigger picture is very good.
